A Testament to Community Power – SPACE in the Toronto Star

On July 1st, Carol Goar wrote an article for the Toronto Star about Community Use of Space and SPACE Coalition’s successes.

“This is the story of a remarkable recovery.

It’s not a total recovery and probably never will be. But it is a welcome affirmation, on Canada’s 142nd birthday, that citizens who roll up their sleeves can make their country better.

The narrative begins in 1998. Mike Harris, Ontario’s 22nd premier, rewrites the province’s education funding formula. Under his rules, every dollar of provincial money must be used for classroom teaching. No public funds can be spent on extracurricular activities. No school board can dip into its allocation from taxpayers to provide low-cost space for Girl Guide meetings, amateur theatre, sports organizations or homework clubs.”
